Select directories, files and databases to be restored or compared with directory-tree and file-selection windows.
If file list has to be loaded from backup before it can be displayed, a dialog appears and asks if file list should be loaded. Button Complete file list loads all file lists from their backups.
Window Selected files / directories / databases lists files, directories and databases selected for restore. It is most efficient to select all files to be restored first and restore all in one restore operation.
For files to be restored, an alternate target-directory can be specified. For example, backed up file C:\MyDocs\Letter.Doc must be restored into D:\. First, select Letter.Doc. Filename appears in list-window Selected files / directories /databases. To define a new target-directory, file has to be selected again, this time in window Selected files / directories / databases. Several files can be selected if desired. Field Common path is activated automatically and contains common path of selected entries. Common path is the part of directoryname, which is equal for all selected files and directories. In our example, this would be C:\MyDoc. Entry field Target directory / database contains target directory, also C:\MyDoc. Into this field, new target D:\ can be entered. To actualize new setting, click on button Set.
The new definition appears in window Selected files / directories /databases:
C:\MyDocs\Letter.Doc -> D:\
Button Remove removes selected entries in Selected files / directories /databases from this window, which unselects them for restore.
If databases are selected, Full- differential- and incremental backups are automatically applied in the right order during restore. It is usually best to select databases entirely. Databases are normally restored to original location, but they can be restored to file if desired, as described above. This allows for manual restoration in some cases, for example with SQL Server's RESTORE-command.
Button Find... leads to dialog, where you can list files, directories and databases with given names. E.g., you can list all *.Doc files.
OK or Cancel quit the dialog. OK confirms the selections and the selected files and directories are shown in display window Selected files / directories /databases.
Full restore of a computer must be done in Directory Service Restore Mode Even for Windows 2000/XP Professional System it is best done in Directory Service Restore mode or Save Mode, to avoid interaction with Windows File Protection (WFP). The system should have same Windows version and service pack installed as was backed up. Drives (at least system drive) and System State should be restored in a single run. SQL Server, Exchange Server and SharePoint Portal Server should not be restored during full restore or Disaster Recovery, but later separately.
